How to Treat Your Pregnant Wife: Ideas She'll Actually Love

By Lake District Spas

Your pregnant wife is dealing with back pain, swollen ankles, disrupted sleep, and a body under more physical pressure than she's letting on. The most useful thing you can do is address one of those directly. A pregnancy-specific spa treatment does that, specialist therapists use adapted positioning, safe product formulations, and techniques designed for the physical demands of pregnancy.

Nine Lake District spas offer dedicated pregnancy treatments, ranging from 45-minute back massages to 90-minute full-body sessions. Individual prices run from £70 to £170. The majority are available from 12 weeks, with several recommending the second trimester onwards.

Why Pregnancy Treatments Are Different

Standard massages are not safe during pregnancy. The adapted versions use specialist side-lying positioning or an Elemis pregnancy beanbag, allowing therapists to work the lower back, hips, and legs without applying pressure to the abdomen. Product formulations are also screened, essential oils that are contraindicated during pregnancy are removed from the blend.

Back pain affects up to 70% of pregnant women and typically peaks between weeks 24 and 36. Fluid retention causes foot and ankle swelling from around week 20. A 50 to 60-minute treatment addresses both in a way that's hard to replicate at home. Booking it for her also removes the barrier of her having to organise it herself, which at this point in a pregnancy carries real weight.

A Lake District spa break builds time around the treatment: thermal facilities before the appointment, a relaxation room after, and a meal if you stay for the day or overnight. That shift from a single appointment to a full day off is where the idea lands as something genuinely worthwhile.

Trimester Timing

Most treatments are available from 12 weeks. Several Elemis-based menus, including at Appleby Manor Hotel & Garden Spa, recommend starting from the second trimester. Brimstone Spa's Mamabird is available in the second and third trimesters only but note it's exclusively for guests staying at the hotel. The Peaceful Pregnancy Massage at Ambleside Salutation Hotel & Spa specifies a 12 to 38-week window. If you are booking in the first trimester, confirm the spa's timing requirements before paying.

Treatments to Book

Appleby Manor Hotel & Garden Spa in Appleby-in-Westmorland has the lowest-priced dedicated pregnancy treatment in the Lake District. The 65 minutes Elemis Peaceful Pregnancy Massage is from £70, using the Elemis beanbag positioning system to work on back tension and swelling in the hands and feet. Recommended from the second trimester.

Lodore Falls Hotel Spa in Borrowdale offers two pregnancy-specific options. The ishga Mum To Be Pregnancy Massage uses seaweed-based products from the Outer Hebrides, from £100 for 50 minutes, suitable after the first trimester. The Elemis Peaceful Pregnancy Massage uses aromatics formulated safe for pregnancy, also from £100 for 50 minutes.

Another Place, The Lake at Ullswater offers three pregnancy-safe treatments, the widest range of any Lake District spa. A 60 minutes pregnancy massage from £90 works the full body past the first trimester. The Drench Facial (Pregnancy) from £90 covers cleanse, exfoliation, face and neck massage, mask, and scalp massage. The pregnancy hand and feet treatment includes soak, scrub and massage for £80. All three can be combined across a longer visit.

Daffodil Hotel Spa in Grasmere runs Temple Spa's New Beginnings pregnancy range. The 45 minutes back and scalp treatment starts from £85 and focuses on the areas carrying the most pregnancy-related load. The 90 minutes full-body version adds face and scalp treatment, from £170.

Lakeside Hotel & Spa at Newby Bridge offers the Elemis Pregnancy Massage from £110 for 60 minutes. The treatment is designed for every stage of pregnancy with specialist positioning throughout.
